HUD Launches English-Only Initiative

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently released a memo detailing their shift to conducting the majority of their services in English.

In the memo, HUD Deputy Secretary Andrew Hughes stated that “We are one people, united, and we will speak with one voice and one language to deliver on our mission of expanding housing that is affordable, helping those in need, caring for our most vulnerable Americans, and revitalizing rural, tribal, and urban communities.

Outside of a few exceptions required by law, the remainder of HUD’s communications will be in English.

According to a report in the NY Post, prior to this shift HUD was providing services in 222 languages.

ProEnglish is fully in support of this move and encourages all other government departments to issue similar directives if they haven’t already done so.

It helps agencies remain in compliance with Trump’s executive order mandating English as the official language of government operations.

Official English policies are incredibly popular with the American public.

This past spring, ProEnglish commissioned a Rasmussen poll which showed 73% of Americans favor making English the official language of government operations.
