New “Freedom Haulers” Initiative Will Help More Veterans and Improve Road Safety

President Trump recently announced the creation of the “Freedom Haulers” program, an initiative which will allow veterans with experience driving large military vehicles to bypass the commercial driver’s license (CDL) skills test.

The program will also allow military personnel without driving experience to attend a CDL school free of charge through the GI Bill during the last six months of active duty.

This move will put more qualified CDL drivers on our roads who are fluent in English and provide veterans another well-paying career option as they transition into civilian life.

As President Trump said in a media appearance about the program, it will cut down on the number of illegal aliens driving trucks and replace them with highly qualified veterans in need of work.

According to an article in the Associated Press, over 40,000 veterans have already used the program, which is a positive sign for its long-term success.

The Trump administration has made reforming the trucking industry a key priority after a number of high-profile, fatal accidents involving truck drivers who were illegally in the country and/or lacked English fluency.

This includes strengthening work visas requirements for all foreign truckers and a recent crackdown on truck drivers who lacked English proficiency and/or were illegally in the country.
