Press Release: ProEnglish Urges Lame-Duck Congress to Codify Official English Into Law

Organization urges Congress to codify President Trump’s executive order declaring English our national language into federal law.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — ProEnglish, the nation’s leading advocate for official English policies, is calling on the lame-duck Congress to pass legislation codifying English as our country’s national language.

H.R. 1772 in the House and S. 542 in the Senate are two active pieces of legislation that would make English the official language of federal government operations. Both bills would codify President Trump’s March 2025 Executive Order 14224, which designated English as the official language of the United States.

This policy has broad public support. A March 2025 Rasmussen poll commissioned by ProEnglish found that 73% of Americans favor making English the national language. Studies have also indicated that official English policies could save taxpayers millions of dollars annually by reducing government translation costs.

ProEnglish Executive Director Ellen Hamilton-Cotten stated that the time to pass this legislation is now:

“Now is the time to codify into law President Trump’s executive order declaring English as our national language. This is a common-sense policy that’s overwhelmingly supported by the American people. Congress must step up to the plate and pass this legislation.”

ProEnglish will work with its allies in Congress during the lame-duck session to advance H.R. 1772 and S. 542 and pass official English into law.
