J.D. Vance’s Continuing Support of Official English in Government
ProEnglish and our nationwide supporters are fortunate to have the support of Vice President-elect J.D. Vance, who is one of the biggest proponents of Official English. He is the chief sponsor of the English Language Unity Act (S. 1109) in the United State Senate. Vance will be a powerful ally for official English as the official language of government operations once he officially enters office this coming January.
In a meeting with ProEnglish Board member Phil Kent, Vance emphasized that this legislation is essential for America. Vance also underscored that the English language – our common tongue – has been a cornerstone of American culture for over 250 years.
In a Fox News interview, Vance said, “It is far past time for Congress to codify its place into law, which is exactly what this bill does. This commonsense legislation recognizes an inherent truth: English is the language of this country. That is why an overwhelming majority of the American people support this proposal.”
With English as the official language of government, he told Kent that each federal agency would have to work to ensure that persons, entities, and all recipients of federal financial assistance would not be burdened by any additional requirements for any other foreign language access, translations or interpretations.
Now is the time to act and generate as much support as possible for official English. If signed into law, this legislation will save untold millions in taxpayers dollars, encourage assimilation, and help unite our country.
