Support Rep. King’s Amendment Cutting Taxpayer Funding Of Costly Translation Services

Congressman Steve King, a longtime ally of official English measures in Congress, recently introduced an amendment to H.R. 5485 to defund costly translation costs associated with President Clinton’s Executive Order 13166.

President Clinton’s Executive Order 13166 , also known as “Improving Access to Services for Persons with Limited English Proficiency,” directs all federal agencies to draft plans to “improve access to federally conducted or federally assisted programs for persons who, as a result of national origin, are limited in their English proficiency.”

Executive Order 13166 directs federal funds recipients to pay for the enormous cost of providing translation and interpreter services from their own funds. There is no federal reimbursement. It covers tens of thousands of state and local government agencies as well as government contractors.

This executive order gives the United States hundreds of all-but-official languages, and taxpayers have to foot the bill!

Rep. Steve King’s amendment to H.R. 5485 effectively restricts funding to Executive Order 13166, defunding the government’s ability to foot the bill for costly translation and interpreter services.
