Take Action: Tell congress to rein in this rogue agency's attack on the Salvation Army! Click here. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is suing the Salvation Army over its English-on-the-job policy. According to the EEOC complaint, the Salvation Army made non-English speaking employees aware of its English-on-the-job rule, but then DELAYED implementation of the rule for ONE YEAR to give non-English speaking employees time to learn basic English. Nevertheless, the EEOC is suing the organization "for its malicious and
reckless conduct" and seeking damages to compensate Spanish-speaking employees
for the "emotional pain, suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, humiliation,
and inconvenience" they suffered by being asked to learn English and speak
it on the job. Syndicated Columnst Paul Weyrich reports:
ProEnglish has been at the forefront of efforts to educate employers
about their rights and to inform Congress and others about the EEOC's
renegade efforts. On the other hand, the Equal Employment Opportunity
Commission (EEOC) presumes that English-workplace policies are discriminatory,
and thus illegal under the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The courts have repeatedly affirmed that employers have the right to establish English language policies. But, the EEOC "disagrees" with these rulings, and continues to enforce a policy which the courts have ruled is ultra vires, or "beyond the oversight" of the EEOC.
